It reflects the discipline and consistency that Dane brings to his own life but to his leadership every day. Having worked as part of Dane's team for many years, I have had the opportunity to observe first-hand that these principles are not academic constructs or fashionable management trends. They are practical disciplines that work. The book is also rich with anecdotes and examples drawn from lived experience, making the lessons both relatable and actionable. As an executive coach and mentor, I found myself continually identifying tools and frameworks that I can use with leaders at different stages of their careers. If you are looking for tools, disciplines and behaviours that can genuinely improve your effectiveness as a leader, and you are prepared to do the work – I highly recommend it. Perhaps most importantly, after working alongside Dane – who I still rate as the best CEO I have had the pleasure to support and work alongside – I have seen these principles applied successfully in real-world situations, I know that what is written in these pages works.

Dane has an exceptional ability to develop leaders, and throughout the book it feels as though he is personally mentoring you by challenging your thinking, providing clear answers and equipping you with practical steps you can apply immediately. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to become a better leader and deliver meaningful, lasting outcomes.

It’s a great read! What I appreciated most is how the book centres on the idea of “disciplined leadership”. It is a strong reminder that leadership takes intention and deliberate action. The book is full of practical nuggets on core leadership topics, from leading yourself and others to leading a board and navigating a crisis. It is also thoughtfully structured. The “Founder Story” segments bring the ideas to life through real examples. The “Monday Reflection” prompts invite you to pause and reflect, while the “Monday Ready” sections challenge you to apply the lessons immediately. This is a useful read for all leaders, but it is particularly relevant for founders building and scaling a company.

What change are you going to make on Monday? That’s the question all leaders should be asking themselves week-in, week-out, in this compelling new business coaching book by Dane Hudson. Although written from his experience as a CEO, consultant and coach, Danes’s practical and commonsense approach makes this a must read for all leaders and aspiring leaders, whatever your company or profession. What we do and how we do it matters. Professional competence will get you only so far, after that it’s leadership that matters, and how your behaviours impact everyone else really matters. The structure and content of the book provides well-organised relatable principles, together with ideas that you can try or adapt for your own organisation or circumstances. Having known of Dane and his business for a number of years, it is exactly the sort of learning you would hope to achieve if you were able to get coaching from him directly. For me, Discipline beats Vision deserves to sit on the bookshelf with Stephen Covey’s, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and James Clear’s, Atomic Habits. Yes, there are other business school classics, but this is a practical book that will help everyone who works in a team environment, way beyond its intended audience of managing start-ups. My suggestion for this Monday is buy yourself a copy and start implementing!
